Chiming in also to agree here, having the ability to create rules to auto-categorize transactions would be super useful.
Stessa does “try” and learn and categorize transactions. My problem with this is that you can’t edit the rules if they are wrong
Stessa “tries” to auto-categorize transactions, but gets them wrong more often than not. It seems there may be “hidden” rules that we can’t see of edit. I would like to be able to edit the rules, or disable their use altogether. Currently, every transaction can be in 1 of 3 states:
- Uncategorized
- Automatically categorized correctly
- Automatically categorized incorrectly
This makes it very hard to keep track of what was edited to correct a mis-categorized transaction and what hasn’t even been looked at yet. How am I to know what’s been fixed and what hasn’t?
+1 upvote for this.
Setting transaction rules for specific merchants to define the category for recurring charges would be very beneficial and provide automation. Mint (personal finance) does this and it works great. Please add this feature!
Yes, I am facing the same problem even with rent. It will be automatically categorized only with the exact rent, but many tenants pay in two or more installment and even though the payments have tenant name, they are not recognized, and I have to link them to the tenant.

I am still evaluating this program, and this issue (as well as better/custom categories) are the only show-stoppers preventing from going all in.
would be a great addition to make Stessa more useful
There should be tab to add rules based on trigger words and amounts for auto categorization of Books, this would save a lot of time for everyone
@jeffrey great suggestion. this is a recurring ask amongst us users. we would all love and benefit from rules that we can control. completely agree.

Exactly!
Rocket Money has this on their app already.
And unfortunately, the AI doesn’t seem to be smart enough to default certain transactions to how you usually tag them when they are repeated.
It’s not auto, but I was able to bulk categorize: Use Bulk Transaction Edits to Save Time | Stessa Help Center
Did you ever get an answer to this?
Please add this feature…!! it will save great time and avoid human error

YES! There are certain recurring payments that are allocated to ONLY one property. I would love to be able to tag these payments and have them automatically categorized to the designated property and category. It seems like this would be an easy IT fix.
Would be hugely helpful. Just basic rules- doesn’t have to take years to get around to implementing.
